Prior to the discovery of this medication, it was human nature to discovery ways to alleviate pain and inflammation. Remedies such as willow bark, a precursor to aspirin has been used for hundreds if not thousnads of years. Despite its effective use, came with downsides such as stomach irritation, or inconsitent potency.
The search for a safer, and more effective pain reliever was intensified in the 1900s. With researchers aiming to create a drug that reduce inflammation, similar to aspirin, but fewer side effects, leading to the creation of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, otherwise known as NSAIDs. Drugs classified as such, eventually including ibuprofen.
The discovery of ibuprofen can be credited to a team of scientists led by Dr. Stewart Adams. In the 1950s, Adams and his colleagues set out to find a new drug to treat rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation. After a decade of research and testing over 600 compounds, they discovered a molecule known as isobutylphenylpropionic-acid better known as ibuprofen.
In 1961, Boots patented ibuprofen, and it was introduced as a prescription medication in the United Kingdom in 1969 under the brand name Brufen. Quickly gaining attention for its ability to provide effective pain relief with a lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects compared to aspirin.
